WAEC cancels subject, entire results of some 2021 BECE students

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says the subject and entire results of some candidates who sat for the 2021 edition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) have been cancelled over examination malpractice.

In a blog post sighted by EducationWeb, the Examination Body said the decision to cancel the national examination results was the outcome of a meeting held by its Examiners’ Appointment Committee on February 22, 2022.

“Following the conduct of investigations into cases of examination malpractice detected during the conduct of the exams, the Examiners’ Appointment Committee for the BECE has approved the cancellation of some results,” it stated.

The Council on Monday said the subject results of 138 students who partook in the just-ended BECE have been cancelled for the offence of either bringing in foreign materials into the exams hall or colluding with other candidates.

“Subject results of 148 candidates and the entire results of 109 candidates have been withheld pending the conclusion of the investigation into various cases of alleged examination malpractice,” the Examinations Council said in the post.

The scripts of candidates from 24 Junior High Schools in certain subjects according to WAEC are undergoing scrutiny. The withheld results it has said may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of ongoing investigations.

A total of 572,167 Junior High School students made up of 287,730 boys and 284,437 girls entered for the examination. Among the registered candidates, 61 had visual impairment and 321 were identified with hearing impairment.
