The Electoral Commission (EC) has clarified that the voter register for the 2024 General Election is still provisional and has not been finalized.
Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, said “The voter register in its current state is provisional and the exhibition exercise is meant to correct all errors before it is finalized for the elections.”
Dr Asare explained that the exhibition exercise is aimed at correcting the provisional voter register to make it robust and credible for the 2024 general election. “After the exhibition exercise, the voter register will be accurate and credible, and this will result in the final register which will be used for the elections.”
The EC has come under pressure from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to release the voter register, but Dr. Asare assured that the commission is working within the law. “Per regulation 22 of CI91 as amended by CI126, the commission is required to give the provisional register to the political parties not later than three months from the end of the registration period.”
Dr. Asare also debunked claims that the EC had not provided political parties with copies of the register. “We wish to state that the external drives containing the provisional voter register are ready for pickup. However, we can state on record that the NDC has collected its external drive which contains the provisional voter register.”
The EC has urged registered voters to check their details during the exhibition exercise. “The purpose of the exhibition exercise is to allow registered voters to verify their details, that is name, age, sex, polling station, and photograph as captured during the registration exercise and make requests for amendments, changes, or insertions where necessary to their details in the voter’s register.”
Dr Asare emphasized that the EC is committed to conducting a credible and transparent election. “We are working hard to ensure that the voter register is accurate and reliable for the 2024 general election.” The exhibition exercise is scheduled to take place on August 20.
