The International Conference on Ocean Governance 2024 has opened its doors, focusing on the critical theme of establishing secure maritime boundaries across Africa. This significant event, titled “Emerging Issues in Maritime Boundary Delimitation and Ocean Governance in Africa: Bridging Law, Policy, Science, and Practice,” aims to address the pressing challenges faced by African nations in defining their maritime territories.

Addressing Maritime Challenges

The conference highlighted the urgent need for clear maritime boundaries to mitigate overlapping territorial claims that have historically led to conflicts and resource management issues among neighboring states.

The discussions emphasized that ambiguity in maritime delimitations poses substantial risks to both national interests and regional stability.

Ghana’s Commitment to Maritime Strategy Ghana’s commitment to maritime governance was prominently featured, particularly through the introduction of the National Integrated Maritime Strategy (NIMS) in 2023. This initiative aims to effectively delineate the country’s maritime boundaries. Additionally, the construction of a lighthouse at the Land Boundary Terminus Pillar (BP 55) in New Town, Western Region, was announced as a vital step to enhance maritime safety and clearly demarcate territorial limits.

Collaborative Efforts for Ocean Governance

The conference underscored the importance of a collaborative approach to tackle the emerging issues in maritime governance. Participants were encouraged to engage in meaningful discussions that will shape the future of Africa’s oceans, highlighting the shared responsibility among all stakeholders.

Hon. Kathleen Quartey Ayensu, Chair of the Conference and Commissioner at the African Union Commission on International Law**, pointed out that with 39 African countries having coastlines, ongoing dialogue and collaboration in ocean governance are essential. She emphasized the need for sharing best practices to effectively address common challenges.

Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, welcomed attendees and expressed excitement about the partnership with the Norwegian Centre for Law of the Sea Development Project. This collaboration aims to promote sustainable ocean governance and environmental stewardship, aligning with Ghana’s interests as a coastal nation.
