The IMF is a global organization that works with countries to help them develop their economies and reduce poverty. It provides loans, but only when other sources of funding are unavailable or inadequate. The IMF has been around since 1945, when 44 countries met in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, USA to discuss how they could work together to rebuild Europe after World War II and prevent another global depression like the one that occurred in 1929-1933. Since then it has helped many countries recover from financial crises by providing them with much-needed resources until they can get back on their feet again.
