The leadership of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) following a brief detail of the dangerous situation in Ukraine on Wednesday appealed to the government to put in place steps to bring back all Ghanaian students home.

In a statement copied to EducationWeb, the Students Union said the pressure from Russia to invade Ukraine poses a risk to Ghanaian students studying in the Eastern Province of Ukraine, hence they should be evacuated immediately.

“As the conflict escalates within the region, governments of countries across the world are prioritizing the evacuation of their citizens from the area to forestall harm to their citizens,” the Union of Ghana Students said on Wednesday

The National Union as part of efforts to ensure the safety of the aggrieved students suggested for the government to go by the method used to evacuate Ghanaian students from China at the peak of the outbreak of the coronavirus.

“We are asking for the evacuation of students from the Eastern provinces of Ukraine which is the present nuclear of the conflict and out of Russia as the country may pose overall hostile environments of our students,” NUGS urged.

It further proposed, “students may be temporarily resettled in the Western province of Ukraine which remains calm at present or most preferably out of the country altogether and back home till a resolution is reached on the crisis.”
