Three African candidates, including Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, are in the running for the role of Commonwealth Secretary-General in October 2024.

Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey faces strong opposition from Dr. Mamadou Tangara of The Gambia and Mr. Joshua Setipa of Lesotho.

The outcome of this closely contested election will be determined by the Heads of Government and is expected to shape the Commonwealth’s future direction, reinforcing its core values and fostering progress on issues important to both Africans and the wider Commonwealth community.

The three candidates will present their visions for the Commonwealth’s future during a debate on Wednesday, 11 September 2024, at London’s Chatham House.

The debate, organised by the Commonwealth Foundation, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, and the Royal Institute of International Affairs, offers Shirley Botchwey, Mamadou Tangara, and Joshua Setipa an opportunity to articulate their goals for the organization’s next chapter.

This event precedes the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa in October, where the new Secretary-General will be selected.

To increase citizen engagement, the Commonwealth is inviting citizens from its member countries to submit questions for the debate, recognising the public’s direct interest in the outcome.

Renowned broadcast journalist Zainab Bedawi will moderate the discussion and pose the selected questions, ensuring that the concerns and interests of the Commonwealth’s people are represented.
