Some aggrieved members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Asante Akim Central Constituency have called for the removal of their Municipal Chief Executive as Election Committee Chairman.

They argue that his continous occupancy of the role will be detrimental to the party’s fortunes as it prepares to hold on to power after the 2024 election.

The aggrieved members who made this known in a press conference indicated that an independent candidate garnering 12,000 votes in the 2020 election is an indication that he needs to be taken off the said position.

Making a case to back the reason why hey call for a change from the said position, they said “About 30 delegates were illegally suspended for reasons best known to the constituency executives. Although some of these delegates were later cleared by the disciplinary committee the executives never accepted them back because they had their own intentions”.

Forever Product

Adding that “Some of the existing delegates were disenfranchised on the day of elections because they could not find their names in the delegates album. These delegates although embittered never relaxed. They joined the campaign to ensure that Nana Akufo-Addo secure over 30,000 votes in the Presidential elections. It must however be stated that because the MP was forced down the throat of the Asante Akim Central electorates, most of them decided to vote for the Independent candidate which even party officers could not do anything to stop them”.

The members used the opportunity to also call on the party’s leadership to call for a free and fair polling station election.

“We are not asking much. As a party which operates with the tenets of democracy, we ask for free and fair elections in this polling station elections. We therefore implore the rank and file of the party to declare the polling station elections at Asante Akim Central null and void. We will need the supervision of representatives of the National Executives to conduct free and fair elections since the Election Committee have exhibited biases.”

ASANTE AKIM CENTRAL NPP CALL FOR THE REMOVAL OF THEIR MCE AS ELECTION COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN AND CALLS FOR FREE AND FAIR POLLING STATIONS ELECTIONS

Good evening members of the press and good people of Asante Akim Central

We have gathered here today to bring to bear happenings in the NPP which have cost the party in previous years and have the potential to affect the party’s chances of breaking the 8 and securing the parliamentary seats for the NPP.

We wish to first of all remind you that in the 2020 general elections an Independent candidate obtained over 12,000 votes which ideally could have gone for the NPP.

Ladies and gentlemen let me recap a few situations which caused the Independent candidate to obtain this huge number of votes

  1. About 30 delegates were illegally suspended for reasons best known to the constituency executives. Although some of these delegates were later cleared by the disciplinary committee the executives never accepted them back because they had their own intentions.
  2. Some of the existing delegates were disenfranchised on the day of elections because they could not find their names in the delegates album. These delegates although embittered never relaxed. They joined the campaign to ensure that Nana Akufo-Addo secure over 30,000 votes in the Presidential elections. It must however be stated that because the MP was forced down the throat of the Asante Akim Central electorates, most of them decided to vote for the Independent candidate which even party officers could not do anything to stop them.

Later in 2021 constituency executives issued de-stresser letters to some delegates with the allegations that they campaigned for the Independent candidate.

Upon several petitions and letters that were sent to the executives to provide evidence, not even a single response was issued by the executives. Interestingly one of the constituency officers openly declared his vote for the John Mahama and the NDC, yet he is currently working with the team. This clearly tells us that the party’s constituency officers are not concerned about the well-being of the party but they are only concerned about their personal well being and interests.

We have endured this all this while because we love our party and never wanted to act in any way to bring the party’s name to shame.

One would have thought that the Municipal Chief Executive, Honorable Robert Yaw Kwakye knowing all these things would have initiated steps to mend the cracks in the party and ensure that the Asante Akim Central NPP is United as we seek to break the 8.

Just recently, national officers opened nominations for people to contest as polling station officers with a clear regulation that all party faithfuls who are eligible could pick forms to contest as delegates.
The MCE who is the chairman of the Elections Committee violated this regulation by secretly sharing forms to his favourites clandestinely and denying other potential party supporters the opportunity to pick some of the forms.

Following a petition to the National Executives, the General Secretary issued forms to be distributed to party supporters who were denied by the MCE

Although the chairman of the committee received the forms, he conducted vetting for all these applicants leaving out those he personally issued forms, thus violating the guideline that every applicant must be vetted.

This morning, while aspirants were waiting for vetting results, we gathered information that the committee is secretly conducting elections declaring his favourites as unopposed.

Since 1992, this is the first time we are experiencing these things in the Asante Akim Central NPP.

We wish to remind National Officers that situations like these led to an Independent candidate snatching the Fomena seat.

We also wish to remind national officers that some of these situations also led to the 137-137 we have in parliament now.

We wish to remind the MCE that his duty as the head of the municipality is to ensure peace and sanity within the party. However, his actions and inactions have brought chaos in the party within Asante Akyem Central.

We are not asking much. As a party which operates with the tenets of democracy, we ask for free and fair elections in this polling station elections. We therefore implore the rank and file of the party to declare the polling station elections at Asante Akim Central null and void. We will need the supervision of representatives of the National Executives to conduct free and fair elections since the Election Committee have exhibited biases.
