The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned comments made by the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South in the Eastern Region, Mr Samuel Atta Akyea, who labelled the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, as a “drunk” during a mini-rally on August 27, 2024.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 29, NDC General Secretary Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey described Atta Akyea’s remarks as “reckless and unfounded.”

The NDC argued that such comments undermine the decency of political discourse and reflect the desperation of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the face of potential electoral defeat.

The party praised Mahama as a distinguished statesman with a sterling track record.

“For the record, H.E. John Dramani Mahama is not a drunkard.

He is a distinguished statesman whose commitment to the well-being and progress of Ghana is unquestionable.

His track record in public service and his enduring leadership qualities speak for themselves,” the statement read.

The NDC demanded an immediate retraction and apology from Atta Akyea for his “unprovoked attack” on Mahama’s character.

The party warned that it would explore all available avenues to protect the integrity and reputation of its flagbearer if no apology is forthcoming.

“We demand an immediate retraction and apology from Hon. Atta Akyea.

Failure to do so will leave the NDC with no choice but to explore all available avenues to defend the integrity and reputation of our flagbearer,” the statement continued.

The NDC assured Ghanaians of its commitment to a campaign based on ideas and solutions and called on the NPP leadership to rein in its members to maintain a clean and respectful campaign that addresses the concerns of the electorate.
