There is tension at the Ministry of Finance as work activities have reportedly grounded to a halt with top directors and Deputy Minister following new Minister Mohammed Amin Adam on a nationwide Self-promotion’ tour at the expense of critical pending duties.

In a major ministerial reshuffle announced last week, President Akufo-Addo elevated Dr. Amin Adam from his position as Minister of State at the Finance Ministry to head of the Finance Ministry, replacing Ken Ofori-Atta.

This state of affairs where top directors leave their heavy workload to follow a Minister and a Deputy minister to tour Ghana to promote the new Minister is said to be alien to the work of the Ministry.

The new Minister who inherited a nearly messed-up economy and tons of files from his predecessor rather than hit the ground running from day one has rather been “roaming to promote and introduce to shore himself up for future ambitions” when he has less than 10 months to go, a concerned Economist told this portal.

Senior Economists and Advisors who spoke to this portal under the condition of strict anonymity say the new Minister doesn’t appear to be as serious as he was before assuming office.

Since his appointment on the 14th of February 2024, the Minister after receiving various congratulations from stakeholders including bankers, insurers, government contractors, and allied groups launched himself on a “political tour” which insiders describe as “pure Self-promotion”.

Analysts say the new Minister may appear to prioritize “Self-promotion” over the important duties of Economic Management and planning assigned to him on concise notice.

The Finance Minister has reportedly planned to “waste’” the first two to three weeks of his 9-10 months tenure on receiving greetings and paying courtesy calls at the expense of his work.

The Minister wasted this week on a cultural funfair at the Gbewaa Palace where he met The King of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II.

The Yaa Naa expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for the historic appointment of Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, a son of the Dagbon Kingdom to the position of Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, making him the first Northerner and Dagomba to hold that critical position.

The Finance Minister next visited the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II under the pretext of “seeking advice” during peak working hours of the Ministry.

The new Minister went together with his Deputy, Dr John Kumah, and some Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning management staff who should have been in Accra working in the office.

The minister and his entourage later inspected some ongoing development projects in the Ashanti Region under a hurriedly arranged face-saving tour to make the Minister not appear to have wasted his time, this portal was told.

From Kumasi within the week, Dr. Amin Adam visited the Overlord of Akyem Abuakwa State, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, in Kyebi.

The Minister is planning to visit the GA Mante, former President Kufuor among others while his work at the Ministry remains undone.

This state of affairs has reportedly led to a situation where Deputy Finance Minister And Atewa MP Abena Osei Asare signs key documents at the Ministry.
