Father of slain Major Mahama, Captain David Adam Mahama (Rtd), has welcomed the verdict of the high court that sentenced his son’s murderers to life imprisonment.

He said although justice has been delayed, it is better late than never.

“We have waited for almost seven years, now that the time has come, we will take it like that,” the retired soldier said in an interview with Alfred Ocansey on the January 29 edition of Ghana Tonight on TV3.

Earlier, a 7-member jury found twelve accused persons standing trial for the alleged murder of Major Adam Mahama guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and committing murder.

They are; Bernard Asamoah, Kofi Nyame, Charles Kwaning, Kwame Tuffuor, Joseph Appiah Kubi, Michael Anim John Bosie, Akwesi Asante, Emmanuel Baid, oo, and Kwadzo Anima.

Among the convicts was the assemblyman of Denkyira-Obuasi, William Baah, who was also found guilty of Abetment to commit t crime namely murder.

Following the verdict of the jury, the Financial and Economic Court 2, presided over by Justice Mariama Owusu sentenced the convicts to life imprisonment.

Per the brief facts the prosecution presented to the court, Major Mahama was the commander of a military detachment stationed at Diaso in the Upper Denkyira West District in the Central Region to check illegal mining activities.

At 8:00 am on May 29, 2017, Major Mahama, wearing civilian clothes but with his sidearm, left his detachment base for a 20-kilometre jog.

At 9:25 am, the military officer got to the outskirts of Denkyira Obuasi, whereseveralf women were selling foodstuffs by the roadside.

He stopped to interact with the women and even bought some snails, which he left in their custody to be taken up on his return from jogging.

While he was taking out money from his pocket to pay for the snails, the woman from whom he had bought the snails and a few others saw his sidearm tucked to his waist.

Soon after he left, one of the women telephoned the assembly member for Denkyira Obuasi to report what they had seen.

“Without verifying the information, the assembly membermobilizedd the accused persons and others, some now at large, to attack the military officer,” the prosecution stated.

It added that the mob met Major Mahama near the Denkyira Obuasi cemetery and, without allowing him to explain and identify himself, “attacked him with implements such as clubs, cement bloc, ks, and machetes, killed him and burnt a portion of his body”.

According to Captain Mahama, he has indications from officials of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) that the case is not over.

“The CID has not closed the case; they say that there are more people in the video that are accomplices, and they have to fish them out. According to them, there are more on the run and when they get them, they will put them before courtase they’ve done for these people… So that’s not the end of the criminals.

There are three separate videos on what happened. How the Denkyira Obuasi people trooped on this innocent person. So, with the three versions, you will see that there are over 100 people. Those who were clubbing, those who were preventing him from running,g and encouraging others to do what they did. We see all of them as accomplices. Those who did the act and those who were accomplices. So, if we got only 14 and 12 have been guilty, well that is the law, so we will take it like that,” he emphasized.
